Hello!
This family farmstead began when Geof decided to buy a herd of cows and a tired old tobacco farm.

Geof and Jane Gledhill were married at Windy Hill Farm in June 1987 and have been visioning, tending, growing, learning, and caring for the land and animals together ever since.
Geof, along with farming, has been practicing law since 1975 and served as the county attorney in Orange County for over 30 years. "Retirement" has allowed more time to grow the farm and his passion for sustainable, natural farming practices. Jane has a background in Nutrition and Women's Health and is passionate about natural living and holistic healthcare. As a CNM, Jane has worked as a homebirth midwife, traveled to Haiti on medical mission trips, and is currently practicing midwifery at Westside OB-GYN in nearby Burlington. Farming is in Jane's blood! She comes from a long line of family farmers. |
Chiara and Russell recognized a tradition in the making and were married on this windy hill in October 2015. They live nestled into the twenty acres of forest on the farm in a century-old tobacco barn-turned-cabin. Chiara and Russell are both passionate about preserving the traditions that have shaped our food systems and our ways of life through the years. In addition to helping Geof and Jane with the farm's existing flora and fauna, they are slowly introducing new ideas that are compatible with the mission of Windy Hill Farm: a mission to build a self-sufficient and ecologically sustainable homestead, where the acts of both teaching and learning about a dynamic, fully-integrated "slow foods" lifestyle are paramount.

Trevor and Danielle (hanging out with nephew Josiah in this picture) live in Bear Creek, NC. Trevor has a natural touch with plants and animals. He has traveled to undeveloped areas in Uruguay and Peru to explore the beauty there and to collect tropical fish for his amazing aquariums. He and Danielle raise a number of other animals and tend a large garden as well. Trevor has become an expert carpenter and craftsman. He graduated with a degree in electrical engineering in 2016. He now works for STRATA Solar, managing a team of technicians and designing and installing photovoltaic systems for homeowners. Trevor and Danielle enjoy family time at Windy Hill and also help with farm projects when time permits.

Johanna lives in Mebane with her husband Nathan and their three children. Johanna is a Birth Doula and is also involved in projects and visioning for the farm. Nathan is a pastor and professor at a seminary in NC.
They all love to spend time at Windy Hill Farm and help eat, ahem...pick the blueberries, milk the goats, and be a part of all the other farm chores and adventures! |

"Why do farmers farm, given their economic adversities on top of the many frustrations and difficulties normal to farming? And always the answer is: Love. They must do it for love. Farmers farm for the love of farming. They love to watch and nurture the growth of plants. They love to live in the presence of animals. They love to work outdoors. They love the weather, maybe even when it is making them miserable. They love to live where they work and to work where they live. If the scale of their farming is small enough, they love to work in the company of their children and with the help of their children. They love the measure of independence that farm life can still provide. I have an idea that a lot of farmers have gone to a lot of trouble merely to be self-employed to live at least a part of their lives without a boss."
